I am so excited to announce that my Read Through the USA Lesson Plans have officially been released!!! These plans allow you and your child to read living books set all over the USA while also learning practical geography skills. The curriculum plans covers a 38-week school year with lessons four days per week.
There are two lesson plan options to choose from:
Read Through the USA (Grades 1-3)
The first set of plans are geared only toward students in grades 1-3. They contain:
- A level 3 (or somewhat equivalent) reader for every single state so your child can integrate his/her reading lesson with their study of U.S. history and geography. You can find the full list of leveled readers here.
- 12 read-alouds all set in the U.S. that match each state/region being studied. You can see the full read-aloud list for this set of plans here.
- At least five picture book recommendations set in each state. All picture books recommended are included within the state book lists here.
- Daily mapping questions, map labeling, and the completion of a USA notebook using the spines Trail Guide to U.S. Geography, Junior State Notebook, and Desk Atlas of the United States.
- A huge, markable U.S. map that will be colored and labeled throughout the duration of the school year.
- Drill recommendations that will help your children identify all 50 states and their capitals.
Read Through the USA Lesson Plans (1-5)
If you have a few children in grades 1-5 you’d like to combine, I would recommend using these plans. They contain:
- Reading schedules for both the 50 leveled readers (grades 1-3) and 14 advanced student readers (grades 4-5). You can see the whole list of leveled readers here and advanced readers here.
- 11 read-alouds that are slightly more advanced overall than the Grade 1-3 plans (though the majority of the books overlap). You can see the full read-aloud list for these plans here.
- At least five picture book recommendations set in each state. All picture books recommended are included within the state book lists here.
- Daily mapping questions, map labeling, and the completion of a USA notebook using the spines Trail Guide to U.S. Geography, Junior State Notebook (grades 1-3) OR State Notebook (grades 4-5), and Desk Atlas of the United States.
- A huge, markable U.S. map that will be colored and labeled throughout the duration of the school year.
- Drill recommendations that will help your children identify all 50 states and their capitals.
Other notes:
- Your child(ren) will be reading A LOT of books, and I would highly encourage you to use your library! I have been able to check out every single book in Read Through the USA from our local library.
- The lesson plans last 38 weeks and run on a 4-day per week schedule.
- I am thrilled that Cathy Duffy, a noted homeschool curriculum assessor, reviewed the Grades 1-5 lesson plans on her website! You can see her full review here.
