What are your summer plans? Are you taking a trip or staying closer to home? No matter what your summer looks like, you’ll be able to experience some of the landscapes, history, and famous people that make our 50 states unique… through picture books!
This picture book reading guide contains 100 picture book recommendations, two books for every state. The stories recommended are all living books that are either set in that particular state or feature a prominent person native to that state.
You can read these books aloud with your younger kids, ask your older kids read them on their own, skip around on the book list, or just pick and choose which books look interesting. It’s totally up to you! No matter how you use the guide (or at what time of year!), you’ll find some wonderful picture books that I hope will become family favorites.
I’ve also included some further enrichment activities if you want to dig a little bit deeper! These include:
- Printable timeline pages that can be incorporated with the picture books.
- Dates for each picture book’s setting or publication to incorporate on the timeline.
- Additional activities including geography quiz suggestions and a blank U.S. map to label and color as you read.
I was also very intentional to only include books that should be easy to find. In fact, I was able to check out all 100 of these books from my local library!
